What is so special about an amp stack?

Is it just a combo amp under a cabinet amp under a head amp? And explain the difference between each amp. Is it worth spending that much money?

An amp stack is merely a guitar amplification system that has the amp separate from the speaker cabinets. A combo amp has the electronics and speakers together in one cabinet.

If most guitarists were honest about it, they would say that the thing that makes a stack special is that it looks cool (and yeah, it does).

Personally, I like using a “stack” system because I can scale my rig to the size of the room. If I’m playing a 100 seat club, I’ll take out an amp and a 2×12 cabinet. A 400-500 seat room, I’ll take a 4×12 cabinet. And for the occasional really big show (or outdoor gig), I’ll take two or more of my 4×12s.

Is it worth spending the money? If you’re just playing at home or jamming in a garage with friends, I’d say no. You can buy the combo version of an amp for less than the amp/cabinet solution will cost you.
