Promag Plus
AK 47 Magazine issues and questions!?
I am looking for a decent site that ell pretty dcently priced AK 47 magazines. I prefer 30 rounders. What make is the best AK 47 magazine. I have an SKS and it used the TAPCO 20 rounders and they work flawlessly. Does anyone use the following companies that make AK 47 magazine.
1- TAPCO
2- PW Arms
3- Century Arms
4-American Tactical
5- ProMag
6- Arsenal
I am looking for reliability rather than cost but that would be nice too. I did find a decently priced site calle: www.keltecpistols.com they have mags for sale from : $14.95-$25.99 for 30 round mags.
plus i would appreciate if you would descrbe ifi should buy polymer or metal. I plan on using more than 9 AK mags for my Kit . So it will be pretty heavy .
As a rule get metal, and get real military magazines. The Chinese “flat backs” are really nice, they’re being brought in through Yugoslavia, so you sometimes see them sold as “Yugoslavian”. They don’t have the pronounced rib on the back… Nice magazines, comfortable to hold and high quality. Reliable.

The “Eastern European” spined backs are also good, although I don’t prefer them. They work just as well, just aren’t as comfortable.
The exception on polymer magazines is the Bulgarian “Circle Ten” magazines. Near the bottom edge, you will see a 10, with a circle around it. These are mostly polymer, but have steel reinforcement in critical areas.
The real Russian Bakelite magazines are pretty good, but are collectible and cost a lot. $70+ sometimes.
Most other polymer magazines are US-made, and don’t have steel or don’t have enough steel. The new, commercial Bulgarian magazines suffer similar problems. The little polymer tab that locks the magazine in breaks off, and it is trash. It needs steel there.
Tapco, Promag, etc. fall into this category…. they’re trash.
I’d also stay clear of the Korean magazines… The feed lips aren’t welded on very securely. They’re cheap, but I don’t trust them. (Edit: These are being sold under the American Tactical Imports brand name…)
If you’re buying used magazines at a gun show or something…. Make sure the follows move, and aren’t rusted in place. Make sure the magazine will fit into a rifle or at least don’t have pronounced bulges on the exterior of the feed lip area. If they are spined magazines, inspect the spine for a dent inward, if someone dropped them on the spine it will push it in sharply and make your 30 round magazine a 10-20 round magazine due to follower binding.
