Legend Acoustic

Legend Acoustic
Have you seen Slowhand’s current tour? Incredible!?

If you have, what impressed you the most?

I took my teenage son to see the legend this week and it was amazing! This was the second time I have seen him. My hubby and I got tickets for his last tour as well. He just keeps improving! During the opening number he did not even do a guitar solo, but let the other two guitarists, the drummer and the pianist and organist shine. That he allowed the other artists to showcase their talents right at the beginning was fabulous! Can you imagine having Eric Clapton mentor and encourage you?
My son plays acoustic and electric guitar and usually listens to crap, although he does enjoy EC’s music. I thought it would be great for him to attend this first concert and really experience what guitar really sounds like! He had a geat time and has been looking up tabs, etc.
Anyone else seen Slowhand this time around and what did you think of him?

he’s amazing… my entire family (me, my 13year old sister, my mom, and my 2 aunts) all love eric clapton. and he’s coming to my town this saturday, but i didn’t get any tickets… i will now be regretting that decision with every living moment in my life until i see him live. maybe, just maybe, my friend could take me (he has 2 tickets) but chances are i’ll be at home watching tv.

In the 1990s, producer Rick Rubin (renowned for his work with acts ranging from Run-DMC to Slayer) helped to reinvigorate the career of country legend Johnny Cash by bringing him back to the basics of his sound. On 2005’s 12 SONGS, Rubin facilitates a similar streamlining with pop crooner Neil Diamond, a not entirely surprising move, as Rubin steered Cash toward covering Diamond on AMERICAN III: SOLITARY MAN. The Brooklyn-born performer returns to his singer/songwriter roots, leaving the glitzy bombast of past outings behind, in favor of a warm, organic atmosphere that often highlights Diamond’s own acoustic-guitar playing. This setting allows his emotive voice and distinctive phrasing to carry the tunes, whether he’s pining away on Oh Mary or reveling in unrestrained affirmation on Hell Yeah. Although many of the tunes are strikingly spare, there is room for contributions by stellar backing musicians, including Billy Preston (organ) and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano and organ). An assured album that features Diamond playing to his strengths, 12 SONGS is a welcome return to form for a beloved American pop artist.

At 24 years old, Orianthi has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She’s opened for her hero (STEVE VAI), backed an Idol (CARRIE UNDERWOOD), traded solos with a legend (CARLOS SANTANA) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (MICHAEL JACKSON). What’s left to conquer? The world stage, for one, and this guitar wunderkind has her sights clearly set on the road ahead. After a performance with CARRIE UNDERWOOD on stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards the blogosphere was buzzing with news of this little-known guitar prodigy. It prompted MICHAEL JACKSON to call with an offer for her to be his guitarist for his dates at the O2 Arena in London. When offered the gig in MICHAEL JACKSON’S live band, Orianthi joined a prestigious line of guitar players including EDDIE VAN HALEN, SANTANA, SLASH, STEVE STEVANS, JENNIFER BATTEN and LARRY CARLTON. Sadly the tour was not to be and music lost an icon. Working with Michael was a life-changing experience, Orianthi reflects, One I will never forget. Her story starts in Adelaide on the southern tip of Australia where, at the age of six, Orianthi began taking an interest in her dad’s record collection. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Santana. he was into guitar players that are real songwriters, she boasts. Growing up in the 80s, a decade remembered for its many guitar greats, Orianthi also listened to a lot of Whitesnake, Van Halen and Def Leppard. Her father, who used to be a player in a Greek band, also kept plenty of instruments around the house, and it didn’t take long before Orianthi strummed her first chord. Mastering the six-string came naturally. When I was 11, Carlos Santana came to play Adelaide and that show really affected me, she recounts. I begged my dad to get me a second hand electric guitar so I could be like Carlos, and that was it, no more acoustic. After that, I would buy all of Carlos’ videos – on VHS! – which I kept rewinding to try and learn his solos. I totally wor

Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys concert at Bottom Line on 15 Dec 83

Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys concert at Bottom Line on 15 Dec 83

$12.98

This live recording was made on December 15, 1983, at the legendary Bottom Line club in New York City, as Monroe’s legendary status was beginning to take full bloom. Though he was 73 years old at the time, Monroe played this show as if it were his last, with an energy and enthusiasm that can be clearly heard throughout each track. When combined with the songs from the same day’s late show, this collection makes for a proverbial “greatest hits” collection. This particular set from the early show includes Monroe’s best loved songs – including “Mule Skinner Blues,” “Dark Hollow,” “Rocky Road Blues,” “Uncle Pen” (written about his Dutch uncle Pendleton “Pen” Vandiver, who taught him to play fiddle during World War I) and “Swing Low Sweet Chariot.” The musical legend of Bill Monroe dates back to the 1920s. The Bluegrass music he developed and brought to the masses relies heavily on acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin (the instrument that Monroe played most of the time). In fact, the term “bluegrass” music was actually named after Monroe’s band, the Bluegrass Boys. He chose the name for the band because of the fact that they hailed from Kentucky, where “blue” grass is prevalent in lawns and fields. Fans of country music living in the rural areas of the South quickly took to the purely acoustic music, which Monroe and his band played at a lightning-fast speed complemented with yodeling-styled vocals. “There’s probably nobody really on the face of the earth that ever influenced more music than Bill Monroe,” said country star Ricky Skaggs recently. “In all of history, he’s the biggest single influence in country music.” Skaggs, who once played with Monroe at age six, eventually got his professional start in bluegrass music before moving on to Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band and his own country superstardom. “He didn’t just influence country music, he influenced all music, in general.” This show was recorded during Monroe’s long absence from the recording studio.
