Guitar Music – Learn to Play the Guitar Online

We all know how popular guitars are. The guitar is a very versatile musical instrument that there is practically no end to the wonderful music that can be played with it.

Guitar music has gone way beyond the simple strumming and country music-type beat. The advent of electric guitars made it possible for musicians to pour more of their creative juices.

Add to this the gadgets that can be used to make the music better and more distorted based on preference. Your interest may be in the different genres of music. It may be country, jazz, folk rock, modern rock, acoustic, bald, and others. A guitar will just do as long as you know how to play and you play it in right place with the right mood. With a guitar with you, you can even right your own piece of music in the long run.

What You Will Need

Of course, before you begin your journey to playing the guitar, you will need a few essentials. You need to be armed with enough materials to make sure that you maximize your learning.

First off, you need a six-string guitar. It is unwise to practice with a twelve-string guitar I you have not mastered the six-string guitar yet. Next, you will need a guitar pick to play guitar music smoothly.

For beginners, it is always said that thinner guitar picks are better for easier control when strumming. You also need a Guitar Chord chart so you have a reference whenever you forget a chord. Lastly, you need a music book that contains music lyrics and the guitar chord corresponding to the tune. There are two other intangible things that you will need. You need patience to learn how to play the guitar and you also need a deep passion for music. Without these two, you will never be successful in learning how to play the guitar.

A Few Tips Before Starting

If you want to learn how to play guitar music, you should realize that there are a few things you need to keep in mind. The first thing is that you need to keep your fingernails trimmed.

With long fingernails, you will not be able to press the strings well and this will result to a bad sound. You can produce better sound with trimmed fingernails since the tips of your fingers will be free to press the strings. Next, remember that your fingers will hurt as you progress in playing. You will also develop calluses as a result of pressing the strings. This can be painful but you need to keep on.

This is only one of the few sacrifices you will have to make if you want to learn how to play the guitar. Lastly, you need to ensure that you have already learned your first lesson before moving on to the next one. It is not wise that you move to the next lesson without sort of mastering the previous one because you will not be able to remember it by heart.

Mississippi Fred McDowell concert at Newport Folk Festival on 27 Jul 68

Mississippi Fred McDowell concert at Newport Folk Festival on 27 Jul 68

$6.98

Following the extraordinary backstage jam (also available here in the Concert Vault) that was piped live over the PA system prior to the July 27, 1968 evening performers, Newport Festival director George Wein, announced another unscheduled surprise to begin that evening’s program. On hand and eager to play a few numbers was one of the most important rural blues guitarists to come out of the 1960s blues revival, Mississippi Fred McDowell. At age 55, McDowell had been discovered in 1959, when he was first recorded by music historian, Alan Lomax. Those recordings, which would see release spread out over multiple compilations, Deep South-Sacred and Sinful and Yazoo Delta-Blues and Spirituals on the Prestige label; and Sounds of the South and Roots of the Blues issued by Atlantic Records, announced McDowell to a new legion of fans. These recordings would launch McDowell’s career as a professional musician. Two subsequent 1964 solo albums, released on Arhoolie and Testemant, would cement his reputation, leading to international touring the following year, where he encountered enthusiastic response everywhere he went. In America, McDowell became a frequent performer on the club and festival circuit. Although considered one of the great Mississippi Delta blues men, McDowell was originally from Tennessee, having relocated to Como, Mississippi, in the early 1940s, where he found steady work farming, while performing at local picnics and dances. McDowell would be among the first (if not the first) of the northern Mississippi blues musicians to achieve wide recognition for his music. Although one of his most ubiquitous quotes was the declaration, “I do not play rock ‘n’ roll,” he was not averse to playing an electric guitar. McDowell also took a personal interest in sharing his technique with younger rock and blues musicians. His influence can clearly be heard in subsequent blues recordings by younger Mississippi blues men like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, and he per

Spider John Koerner concert at Ash Grove on 01 Feb 67

$9.98

In direct contrast to the majority of young musicians pursuing American folk and blues during the early 1960’s revivals, “Spider” John Koerner was a true innovator and original. Surprisingly, Koerner never intended on becoming a professional musician. As a teenager, he was far more interested in aviation, which in 1956 brought him to the University of Minnesota to pursue studies in aeronautical engineering. Two years later, at the age of 20, Koerner met fellow student, Harry Weber, who first introduced him to folk music. Weber played guitar himself and exposed Koerner to the likes of blues musicians like Josh White, whom he immediately took to. It was at this point that Koerner’s interest in folk and blues music began. Shortly thereafter, Koerner dropped out and joined the Marine Corps in pursuit of travel, winding up at Camp Pendleton in San Diego for basic training. This didn’t last long as following a few too many beers, Koerner got himself into an altercation that led to his discharge and, by the fall of 1959, he was right back in Minneapolis. A small but vibrant folk music scene was now developing in the Dinkytown neighborhood of Minneapolis and Koerner dove right in. It was during this time that he became friends with another University of Minneapolis student and aspiring folksinger, Bob Dylan, still a teenager at the time. Koerner and Dylan briefly shared an apartment together and began playing weekend gigs at the 10 O’Clock Scholar, a local coffeehouse a few blocks from the University campus. Koerner was already developing a distinctive repertoire and sound that would have a significant influence on Dylan and eventually influence generations of musicians to follow. Playing 12-string guitar, Koerner developed a raw, highly percussive style of guitar playing accentuated by his foot stomping rhythm. He also emulated black vocalists like Big Joe Williams, singing in a style that was closer to shouting than singing. Koerner’s development took a major
