Can you repaint a guitar bridge?
Well, I have a blue Maestro Single cutaway guitar that I got for Christmas, its basically like a lower-end Gibson replica guitar, but its good enough for what I need. Anyways, the bridge is somewhat similar to the Gibson lightning bar bridge, but I can tell that its not a genuine one because its become horribly discolored to the point of going from chrome to a bright red. I’ve resorted to covering it with thin strips of Electric tape and duct tape, but I was hoping for a more permanent solution. Next time I replace the strings, I was thinking that I could unscrew the bridge from the body of the guitar, and spray paint it a bit with black spray paint. I was wondering if this is safe to do. If not not any alternatives from people more experienced than myself would be much welcomed.
Hi! Your best option will be to order a new matching part.
but, in case you dont want to do that….
1) As you mentioned you have paint over metal (which is weird as a matter of fact, and even more if its paint over chrome finish). you can get rid of that paint. thats easier and better then paining over. use any paint scraping tool (like those used for cars) or google for some chemicals.
2) (CHEAP WAY) Yeah, try to get rid of the old paint (before re painint), but in case it does not work (VERY CHEAP WAY) paint it over the thing AND THEN file (to remove paint) the edge where the string leaves the bridge for the neck, so if the paint is thick it does not dump the vibration.
3) (GOOD AND SMART WAY) find local car paint service, go and ask the guys there to remove old paint and if you’d like, put new thin layer in exchange for beer – these guys have all the necessary tools to do good job.
PS forgot to mention, if you have any screws in the bridge or small detachable parts – make sure paint doesnt get on them.
