Guitar Amp and Speaker Cab Impedance Question?
Just wondering if it would be possible to connect a speaker cabinet with a 16 ohm impedance rating into a 8 ohm output. I’ve heard that it’s fine to connect a cabinet into any output as long as the cabinet has an impedance rating higher than the output on the amp head. Just asking if anyone can confirm this. So 8 ohm cab to 4 ohm output is ok, while 4 ohm cab to 16 ohm output would be bad.
Yes you have it right. Use this equation from Ohm’s Law
W=E^2/R……where W = watts, E=Volts , R=ohms. In the equation keep E constant at 110 volts or (110)^2=12100. Divide this number by R= ohms (4, 8, 16) to get the value of how many watts each ohm load would draw. You will see the lower the ohm load the more watts it draws or the more watts it takes to drive the speaker. So basically if you don’t have the power to drive it you could burn up the output unit.
